Food hygiene ratings explained

This page summarises the Food Standards Agency’s public guidance on the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) for people eating out or buying food in Morecambe and nearby areas. It is not legal advice. Always check the latest rating on ratings.food.gov.uk.

What the scheme is for

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme helps you choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving clear information about a business’s hygiene standards. The Food Standards Agency runs the scheme in partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Morecambe the inspecting authority is Lancaster City Council’s food safety team.

A food hygiene rating is not a guide to food quality, taste, customer service, culinary skill, presentation or comfort. It only reflects hygiene standards found at the time of inspection.

The rating scale (0–5)

Businesses get a rating from 5 to 0 based on hygiene standards found at inspection:

The back of the sticker and the online rating also show the date of the inspection.

What inspectors check

At inspection, the local authority food safety officer checks three elements:

  1. How hygienically food is handled — how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.
  2. The physical condition of the premises — cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control and other facilities.
  3. How the business manages food safety — processes, training and systems that keep good hygiene in place over time.

The rating is a snapshot of standards on the day of inspection. It remains the business’s responsibility to comply with food hygiene law at all times.

Where to see ratings

Ratings are published on the FSA’s Food hygiene ratings website. Ratings of 5 are published as soon as the local authority uploads them. Ratings of 0–4 are usually published 3–5 weeks after inspection to allow for an appeal.

In England (including Morecambe), displaying the sticker at the premises is voluntary but encouraged. In Wales and Northern Ireland, display at customer entrances is a legal requirement.

On this directory we show the published FSA rating and rating date for each listing, with a link to check the live figure. We never change a rating for payment, and we do not treat a hygiene score as a star review or AggregateRating.

If you run a food business

Safeguards for businesses include the right to appeal a rating (usually within 21 days of notification), a “right to reply” published online, and (after improvements) a request for a re-rating inspection. Some English local authorities charge for re-rating visits. See the FSA business guidance for full steps and forms.

If food may be unsafe, the officer can take enforcement action, including stopping part of the business or closing it until it is safe to reopen.
